The Morning After – There Are Two Options

Last night Ellen DeGeneres was Captain Phillips. She saved the Oscars from mindlessness. She made it funny and relevant. Relevant to everybody who has money to buy a movie ticket or who has access to Netflix or Roku or Amazon, or the Internet. Pretty much the entire world. Minus the sommeliers of Somalia or the old people of Nebraska. Ellen also achieved the unthinkable. She got very close to destroying the starving diet of Hollywood elite by suggesting to order pizza for men while their women would have sniffed the smell of hut crust. There would have been no pepperoni, and perhaps no mozzarella and perhaps no tomato either, because Hollywood is different than you and me. But perhaps crust, hut thin very thin crust would have been served at Ellen’s pizza party.

And in fact the thought counts. That it is hard and boring and sadistic to be seated for hours next to someone you usually despise or quite hate professionally and have to smile and clap your hands and hope food would be served soon. Not too different than the plight of those demonstrators  from Ukraine, whom Jared Leto mentioned in his acceptance speech, though his juxtaposition of Ukraine and Venezuela only clarified Jared’s understanding of geopolitics: the US wants of a piece of those countries both rich in natural gas (U) and oil (V).

Otherwise, Ellen had cojones for telling us why 12 Years a Slave had to win the big prize: because like slavery in North America, the movie was a British product: with a British director, a British writer, and many British actors. Except Brad Pitt, but he is so cosmopolitan. Like Angie. They have an ease when they hug people that it appears real, and warm, and meaningful, that it does not matter anymore that maybe it is not, because it looks so good. Right now.

Anyway, the morning after the Oscars, your stardom still looks great, Ellen. Thanks!

To the next time. ell
