The Battle of the Weekend: The underdog and the superdog

borisIf you like women’s tennis, as Boris Becker calls this type of endeavor, then you did not miss yesterday’s final at Roland Garros between the petit Romanian, Simona Halep, and the big Russian, Maria Sharapova. If you like geopolitical garble, especially its Eastern European version, you did not miss the game either. And if you watched the game you know that Simona is rather mutt-looking and badly fed, while Maria is the imposing blue-eyed well fed Ginormica of Monsters vs. Aliens.

But what intrigued TPV most was that Sharapova’s [embedyt]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nfuDPWS3q1I[/embedyt]game’s so bad (though the screaming was great).

She won because she dragged her feet.
Because she was late with her service.
Because she played the diva card.
She did not win because her playing was superior: Her game was superior.  She knew how to distract and undermine Halep’s confidence.  Okay , you may say that by stretching out the playtime Sharapova played to her physical strength: the Romanian steroids must be of lesser quality than the Russian ones.

[embedyt]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6iuyqApJmNc[/embedyt]Thus, of course, the Romanian was doomed to tire out first. Okay, the quality of what you ingest goes to the quality of the game. So, for that reason alone, Sharapova deserves the trophy, and also for the sake of the Canon ads.

Do you see Simona Halep ever selling anything except whatever underdogs use to sell us their dream?
