The NY Times says that In a Car-Culture Clash, It’s the Los Angeles Police vs. Pedestrians. But TPV says, police see it differently, “Everyone’s a pedestrian once you drag him out of the car.”
Los Angelinos are proud of the baby steps they’re taking towards being part of a city where pedestrians matter. But they don’t like how cops are treating them. Tickets for jaywalking are the least of their problems.
The Rodney King incident, almost two decades ago, hangs heavy. One Los Angelino pedestrian said he’d been ticketed for jaywalking and then brutalized.
“That’s ridiculous,” said LA’s police chief. ” We have procedures.”
TPV said this sounds like the same old stop and frisk.
“That shows how little you know of police procedures and even of the Supreme Court,” said the Chief. “There’s never, ever, been a policy here or anywhere called stop and frisk.”
There hasn’t? Asked TPV.
“Of course not. You’re confusing it with stop, frisk, and shoot. That’s the policy. We practice it rigorously. So does New York and every other big city. For the life of me I don’t know why they mislabel it .”
Well why are they even bothering with pedestrians when they are so few in LA?
“Well, ” said the Chief, “it’s preemptive. As you know, anyone we drag out of a car, and we do a lot of that, is immediately a pedestrian. Even if they get out of the car to avoid stop, frisk, and shoot, as pedestrians they are immediately subject to the same policy. We don’t want to mislead anyone.”
So this is just a kind of clarification?
“We call it PR.”
