Trump Threatens Minneapolis Police Department to Grab Their Pussy

Trump unleashed the power of Twitter on MPD. That is useful only when it unleashes racism. Especially coming from Trump, a well-known racist.

So, what else can you really do about rampant policy brutality, Mr. Trump?

  1. I liked how you got from the birder in the park to the murder in Minnesota and from those incidents to issues of social justice as they connect to political and economic justice, and the shift in movies too – I barely remember Trading Places but remember it fondly – maybe the charm of the actors as much as anything but I’m sure the idea of if not beating, leveraging the system appealed.

I don’t see much hope for change coming from the top – since I was a kid I’ve seen it the way Bernie says it, enough people have to decide that particular corrupt structures need to be dismantled, that they deserve things like healthcare and a job that takes care of their basic needs, and those needs taken care of when there isn’t a job, and they need to be persuaded to vote, that their vote matters and will be counted (which is even for me these days, a tough sell…) Anyway, my hopes even with Bernie, were not high, they’re less high now.

Like you, I’ve often had that thought: don’t they want something nice? I didn’t think of the Billionaires (now Trillionaires?) they can insulate themselves and the pandemic is a good reminder. Some may say, but they have kids, they need to breath – I think they have a superhuman confidence that they’ll be OK, the last one standing at least.

I’m more interested in the people on the city / subway level. I remember a guy in a suit (and not a great / expensive one) on the very early 242 1 train, angrily kicking a guy sleeping on the floor as he stepped over him, no excuse for that, but that feeling – forget about human decency – just: wouldn’t it be nice if that guy didn’t have to be on your subway floor? Nice for you to not have to step over him?

How much would it cost at the tippy top (a tweak of the tax structure) so that he could have a job that payed for housing and healthcare and childcare – maybe that job could have a little government support, that might cost less than we pay the criminal justice system and the poverty system to “deal with” people who have no place to go.

I think that would take care of a lot of our problems, but maybe not Minnesota (and the like) there are some people who would rather have black people (and I have been convinced that regular old racism is a big part of it) in jail or in the ground than sitting next to them in a suit on the subway – there just doesn’t seem to be a better explanation for why people who would themselves benefit from programs, vote against them – it seems they’d rather suffer than see someone undeserving (black or otherwise different) get something they “don’t deserve / didn’t earn.”

I don’t know what might fix that, I like that idea that we have to believe we (all of us, and all of us each other) deserve it, and vote appropriately, people (I know some) are still working on that.

  2. You may be the only one standing us…nice huh?… but it’s all worthwhile. Thank you

  3. I don’t know if I understand “standing” but that won’t stop me from making my joke:

As long as you can stand each other, that’s what matters!

I am always glad to hear and see your Potholes.

In the video you were asking about riots – reminded me of the bit from Woody Allen about how bricks and baseball bats might be more appropriate than mature reasoning when it came to Nazis in Skokie (something like that)

Jokes aside. I just saw a photo of violence in MN, I can’t blame people for being fed up and frustrated and angry to the point of violence, but what I’m thinking (probably something I read, but I agree): it seems when oppressed people riot, they tend to destroy their own neighborhoods – the people oppressing them are generally safe out of reach, ready to put the survivors in jail and profit from the rebuilding or shortages…
