European authorities are pursuing a network of counterfeiters who passed off hundreds of bottles of mediocre wine as Romanée-Conti, often considered the best and most expensive wine in the world.
Most counterfeit wines find a market in China where the bottles, if genuine, would sell for as much as $12,000 a bottle. Experts say clever marketing explains the counterfeiter’s success.
