Pretty Pretty Good

Bernie Sanders Walking the Line Between Personal Attacks and Political Critiques, by Marquel, TPVs NYTimes Simple Courtesy Section correspondent.

Senator Bernie Sanders has said he would not attack Hillary Rodham Clinton harshly. But pollsters for his campaign are quietly testing pointed critiques of his Democratic opponent.

Not so quietly if you’re really listening. While it’s true the campaign avoids attack, it certainly is not voting for #Hillary. Marquel spoke to a Sanders campaign manager about all this.

“Do you think Hillary would make a good president?” Asked Marquel.

“Oh she’d be wonderful. We’re not in the business of attacking a former First Lady. On the other hand, if we were talking about a hypothetical candidate who the FBI were investigating, I’d be very concerned about who I voted for. But Hillary, she’s fine.” He said.
“But Hillary has adopted all of Bernie’s positions as if she has no ideas of her own. If that’s all she can do, should she be running?” Asked Marquel.
“Of course she should be running. All she shows is good sense when she follows our lead. On the other hand, if a hypothetical candidate opposed gay marriage, favored the Iraq war, and supported trade agreements that impoverish us, and then changed her mind just for votes, I’d avoid that person like the plague. But Hillary is fine. She’d make an excellent president. We’re not about to attack her.”
“Fair enough,” said Marquel, “But what about the fact that she’s been paid off, bought and paid for, by all the special interests that #Bernie opposes. Isn’t she the anti candidate from your political view?” Asked Marquel.
“Please please. Hillary is a revered figure in our country. She’s blazed trails, opened doors. We can’t oppose her. We’re almost ready to endorse her. On the other hand, if there were a candidate who took all her donations from Wall Street banks and has wheeled and dealed with all the forces that are bringing America down, I’d think voting for her is tantamount to treason. But Hillary is fine. And she’s a woman. She’s got a lot going for her.” He said.
“I get the impression that you have mixed feelings about Hillary. This is all a thinly disguised attack on her.” I said.
“Well that’s not so. But if you had a candidate like I’ve hypothesized, not Hillary of course, you certainly wouldn’t even call her human. But that’s not Hillary. She’s definitely human. Or pretty close.”
“Well that’s good enough, I guess. Pretty close is pretty good.”
