The Trump Presidency – Vaccine against Alternative Facts

In a new BBC report the appearance of fake news on websites and social media was said to have inspired scientists to develop a “vaccine” to immunise people against the problem.

A University of Cambridge study devised psychological tools to target fact distortion.

Researchers suggest “pre-emptively exposing” readers to a small “dose” of the misinformation can help organisations cancel out bogus claims.

Stories on the US election and Syria are among those to have caused concern.

“Misinformation can be sticky, spreading and replicating like a virus,” said the University of Cambridge study’s lead author Dr Sander van der Linden. “The idea is to provide a cognitive repertoire that helps build up resistance to misinformation, so the next time people come across it they are less susceptible.”

The study, published in the journal Global Challenges, was conducted as a disguised experiment. More than 2,000 US residents were presented with pictures of President Obama’s 2009 inauguration and Donald’s 2017’s. Then they were told that the picture on the left  – the one filled with back dots which stood for attendees, depicted 500,000 people while the picture on the right, filled with mostly white empty spaces, depicted over 1 million participants.

Some of the 2000 participants started to blink when they heard that claim, but they were soon allowed to take a break from reality, smoke and drink, and even nap. At one point someone gave them a baseball hat and a picture of a naked woman. A beautiful naked woman. Everybody swore they saw that woman recently wearing a blue outfit. A light blue outfit. A beautifully tailored outfit.

They were finally at peace until Kellyanne Conway started explaining falsehood and misinformation. And then everything became foggy. But not for long. Another clip of Kellyanne explaining that Press Secretary Sean Spicer dabs in “alternative facts,” instead of real facts made it all clear, if clarity was what was missing.

Then, the 2000 participants ate, drank, smoked and napped a bit longer. When they woke up the result was amazing. They all agreed that indeed there was room for wiggling the numbers, and that perhaps the Trump inauguration had attracted more alternative people than the Obama’s.

Here’s what transpired on twitter:

KKK keeps retirement away.
