Facebook (or Zuckerberg) - The Times' Deep Throat in Russian Matters

TPV knows that this year’s Pulitzer Prize for excellence in source gathering is gone, but the clock is ticking for that 2015 prize. Its first entry is today’s piece on using the Google English translator to get the gist of how Facebook is used by Russian politicians.

David H. Herszenhorn tells us that finally Russia caught with our early 20th century propaganda style journalism. However, David is outraged that Walter Lippmann‘s Liberty and the News (1920) has finally been translated in Russian (with the same Google translator he uses but in the opposite way).

It is an extraordinary propaganda campaign that political analysts say reflects a new brazenness on the part of Russian officials. And in recent days, it has largely succeeded — at least for Russia’s domestic audience — in painting a picture of chaos and danger in eastern Ukraine, although it was pro-Russian forces themselves who created it by seizing public buildings and setting up roadblocks.

He wrote that after reading Facebook entry upon entry from one famous account after another. Daunting journalism work and the result? Walter Lippmann’s aforementioned book. Hopefully, David will discover the KGB soon and be outraged by it. Then he will move on to Guantanamo and the NSA and Snowden and of course, I do hope we get an idea about the gulag.

  1. Does that Herzenhorn guy get the Pulitzer or the Russian content generators? Is there a prize for translation?
