Ring-a-round the rosie, A pocket full of posies

So, the world is a mess to a large extent because the US spends a lot of money on fomenting violence or at least legal regimes whose parliamentary systems would not pose any threat to American interests.

Now, some of these messes are taking place in Ukraine, a country recently born next to Russia. For the record, while I wish I visited Russia, I never had any such desire about Ukraine, although I understand Crimea has its attractions.

Don’t worry, this is not a travel piece. It is a sad piece, because my dearest Canada has decided to make a military buck out of this mess too.

Amid ongoing violence in eastern Ukraine and concerns about Russia’s military build-up along the border, Ottawa is set to deploy a Hercules transport plane loaded with military supplies to the troubled region.

Canada is following its Bigger Brother’s example: The US is stepping up its military profits in that region too.

Would this backfire? Sure. Would anybody care? Nope. Think only about

the bizarre incident earlier this week, confirmed by the government in Kiev, where 311 Ukrainian troops of the 72nd Army brigade laid down their arms and crossed the border into Russia.  Moscow’s claim that they were trying to defect is suspect, especially since dozens of the troops have reportedly returned to Ukraine.  Kiev argues that the troops simply ran out of ammunition.

Some analysts may consider this proof that weapons sent by the United States & Friends to Ukraine might well end up in rebel or Russian hands.

But perhaps selling arms to Ukraine only to have them used by Russia is not the worst scenario. The lack of discipline and professionalism comes with the territory. The worst part is that

There have been numerous cases, well documented by Western journalists, of Ukrainian forces firing on civilians in recent months. Human Rights Watch believes that indiscriminate rocket fire used by Ukrainian or pro-Kiev forces in Donetsk has killed over a dozen civilians in violation of international laws of war. The New York Times reports that the Ukrainian army probably shelled a Donetsk dental clinic by accident on Wednesday.

So, what are we doing there? Trying to bring Iraq to Europe? The war in Yugoslavia was much promoted by innocuous acts of corporate interest in the potential market of that country and in the end what the West produced are little caliphates of indescribable corruption and human rights violations.

Shall we think twice? Kimberly Marten says yes, and TPV agrees with her.
