Eurovision 2017 Rediscovers Music

Salvador Sobral, 27, won Eurovision 2017 with his love ballad Amar Pelos Dois, which was written by his sister.

He said on receiving the trophy:

“We live in a world of fast food music. This is a victory for music… music isn’t fireworks, music is feeling.”

The winning song stood apart, especially because many countries offered amusing gimmicks (Romanian yodelling, Italy’s dancing gorilla) while most went for sleek, assembly-line pop.

Portugal won with this delicate, heartfelt ballad, which stood out precisely because it refused to  conform to the nonconformist lineup.

Bulgaria came in second, while Moldova was third:

TPV voted for Italy’s Francesco Gabbani!
