The Perils of Translating Putang Ina

In a statement released on Tuesday, Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte said that he was sorry for using ambiguous words.

When I called President Barack Obama a “putang ina” that was meant exactly as what I said, a “putang ina.” Now, if the blogging community chooses to translate my words into “son of a whore,” or “son of a bitch,” that’s not my business. I could kill those who put English words into my mouth, yes, I can easily do that, but I cannot take responsibility for those words. So, “putang ina”  Obama, would you like me to kill the messengers? I can easily do that.

Obama chose to cancel all communication channels with #Duterte afraid that anything else might be misunderstood.
