The Hamas militant group says it opposes a U.N. reconstruction plan for the Gaza Strip following a 50-day war against Israel this summer. Marquel was frankly surprised. It was something like fifty million dollars to repair the devastating damage, but the Palestinians don’t seem to want it. Marquel wondered why.
“This is a plot by the Israelis to cover up their war crimes,” a Hamas leader told me.
“And?” I asked, thinking he might be right.
“We can’t let them get away with it.” He said.
“But meanwhile your people are living in shambles, many without homes at all. Isn’t that important?” I asked.
“Nothing is more important than The Struggle.” He said.
“But couldn’t you struggle more effectively if you had decent housing and infrastructure?” I asked.
“Not if it means destroying the evidence of Israeli war crimes.”
“But it’s part of the public record. There are films, and documentaries, and articles, and countless witnesses.” I noted.
“That doesn’t always work. Look at the Holocaust. Tons of evidence, films, documentaries, even war crimes trials. But we have successfully impeached all that by claiming the Shoah never occurred.” He said proudly.
“But to refuse this money is a kind of peace crime isn’t it? You are making your people suffer in peacetime. That’s a peace crime!” I exclaimed.
“There’s no such thing as a peace crime,” he asserted with confidence.
“I think there is now.” I insisted.
He poured me another coffee and we discussed peace crimes.
