Marxism died as a viable political theory when republicanism stopped being cool.
Fashionable.
Oh, that means it never was. Indeed. Every time a rich biped becomes really rich all they want to do is rub shoulders with European royalty. Dead or alive. They buy a chateau or two ( see Brangelina) or have their offspring ride jumping horses at tournaments with equally horsy loving royals on castle grounds (read Jennifer Gates making Melinda Gates and husband proud parents at Chateau Chantilly in translation “castle whip cream” when she took her turn behind princess Grace’s granddaughter). And the list can go on with Democratic Americans working hard to have their lawyers buy a castle and devise some tax-free charity and then another horse with another charity, etc.
If this is all our bestest Democrats dream of achieving why is the NY Times afraid of endorsing by far the best democrat in the race for the New York gubernatorial democratic primary? Could it be because as Paul Krugman recently wrote, the media are trying hard to avoid telling the true story about how successful France’s welfare system really is, energy equalled only by the fear of debunking the German story of building adequate infrastructure which in English translates into: the government invests in the welfare of its citizens. Invest, invest, invest. Non military investment.
There is no reason to believe that Teachout would be different than her predecessor. Then, why not promote another Democrat toward the Champagne and Brie path? Why should we continue supporting the Savoyard assuming Cuomo has some allegiance gene, he would probably get another Italian villa in Sicilia? It is remarkable how The New York Times twice implicitly endorsed Cuomo by twice saying that Teachout has no experience in lying about principles and promoting friends in key government jobs, doubting such abilities in the everybody man and woman, given the right circumstances. Why does the Times believe that Cuomo will never be but an excellent resource of corporate tax rebates? Is that because he was mentored by the Clintons?
The question about taking chances with a new crop of Democratic candidates remain quizzical to us, at TPV, because based on decades of watching the political game Republicans and Democrats have only distinguished themselves minimally. For the Times to be so inelegant and endorse Cuomo and then Teachout’s running mate, Wu, is caddish and insulting to anybody’s desire to rub shoulders with European royalty, dead or alive. Uncouth and without any display of sportsmanship.
Make it right Times, write another editorial and admit that Teachout and Cuomo are equally equipped for the job, except for Teachout’s unchallenged honesty. Also write that Cuomo had his chance. Four years should be enough for anybody to make it. Look at the Clintons, the last four years were dedicated to using all the capital accumulated during the first administration.
Let Teachout win, Times!
