Where else? Preschool.

Marquel TPVs NYTimes Juice Box Section correspondent was thinking and sipping when he read NYTimes: Why What You Learned in Preschool Is Crucial at Work.

The only jobs showing consistent wage growth in recent years are those requiring both cognitive and social skills. These are some, but certainly not all, of the skills that preschool children have drummed into them.

  • Walking in a close line, hugging the corridor wall, is a basic skill.

The director of employment for one of the nation’s largest employers hailed that saying, “When I hire someone I always have lunch and tell him to return to my office. If he’s all over the corridor, I send him to Hewlett Packard. If he hugs the wall and fits in line, I hire him. It’s as simple as that. People with preschool earn approximately a half million dollars a year more through their lifetime, even compared to Harvard graduates without preschool.”

Marquel was impressed even if his preschool was limited to watching the two oversized and obese Bidnick twins beat up the petite teacher. He talked to other employment firms.

“Ever get off a plane and watch the people with gate checks obstruct the passageway?” Asked one.

“Yeah, So?” Asked Marquel.

“Preschool grads don’t do that. They line up. Against the wall. Sometimes they even hold hands. It’s so cute when grown up men do that out of instinct ” he said.

“Okay lining up. Big deal. But preschool can’t be that overarching.” Said Marquel.
“But you’re wrong. Think of the napping.” He said.
“What of it?” I asked.
“In preschool you learn to nap on schedule and wake up on command. Every employer needs workers like that.” He said.
“We want napping workers?” I asked.
“Not at all. We want wide awake workers. But disciplined. Preschool does it. You tell your workers wake up at 8am and not to nap till they get home.” He said.
And that’s good?” I asked.
“Well, of course. And remember the inside voice.”He said.
“What’s that all about?” I asked.
“Well basically it means your entire work force has learned to shut up. You must see the benefit in that.” He said.
“Well it must depend on the job.” I said.
“Hardly. And there’s also reading time.” He said.
“You’re going to read to your workers?” I asked.
“No but you want them to know how to assemble, listen, and, again, shut up. Could be the most important skill they learn. Shutting up. I love workers like that.” He said.
“What about all the people who don’t have the luck to go to preschool?” I asked.
“We line them up, read them a story about finding a good paying job, fiction of course, and have them nap for the rest of the day. That way we don’t have to disappoint them.” He said.
“They must be disappointed anyway.” I said.

“Probably, we’re never around when they wake up.” He said.

“Where’d you learn that trick?” I asked him.

“Where else? Preschool.”
