Google Goods. Marquel Discovers Thermostats, Fire Alarms, Garbage Disposal, and even Sauteeing Are Done on Google’s Terms.

Google is expanding into consumer goods. It seems a logical move and equally logical that the brand comes along for the ride. The thermostat is driven by the Google search engine. It requires the user to enter a search for the temperature. Or it can be done orally by shouting, “Hey Google!”  You then can say, or technically ask, “how about 75 degrees in the living room?” At that point Google presents the user with choices. The first are ad driven. In this case, one offered a trip to las Vegas where it was exactly 75. Several others were cruises to identical climes. Leafing through the pages you arrive at, “YOUR LIVING ROOM CAN BE 75,” and if you choose that over las Vegas or a cruise, you get what you wanted.

The fire alarm is similarly Google. A small gong is heard and projected on the wall are similar ad preceded choices. The paid ads offer fire insurance, cheap, but a bit late. Another ad offers cleanup services by “experienced post fire professionals.” Finally a series of choices announce fires in various parts of the world. A forest fire in southern California, a fire in a convent in Italy, an out of control conflagration in Sri Lanka, and finally one appears, if you keep scrolling, that says, “There’s a fire in your kitchen spreading to the garage. You have less than thirty seconds to escape alive.”

As is true of all googling (still idiotically funny), you can assure that your info comes up first by paying for an ad driven response. If you’re lucky your residence and circumstances will come up first.

The other products are still on the drawing board, but items like garbage disposals and waste containers will work at the touch of a button. Only your Google skills stand between you and instant gratification. As well as, of course, a well designed ad.

  1. I always wondered why the first result for a Google search like NYC Marathon 2012, would be: Boston Marathon 2012.
