Berlusconi Expelled From Senate in Italy Thinks about Evicting the Senate from Its Current Location

Silvio Berlusconi, Italy’s once-powerful former prime minister, was stripped of his seat on Wednesday, leaving him without elective office for the first time in about two decades. However, his lawyers have filed suit to expel the Senate from its Italianate-columned home because Berlusconi apparently owns it. Wednesday afternoon, having been served the court’s order, all the Senators filed out of the building, passing Berlusconi at the door where he stood, arms folded, and broadly smiling. Cesare Franco, a Senator from Turin, spat at him. The spittle passed about three feet over the head of the Lilliputian former premier, who smiled even more broadly. As the last senator exited the building, Berlusconi started to dance as he sang, to the tune of Arrivederci Roma, his improvised lyrics, “Arrivederci Senatore.”

“We’ll be back,” snapped Senator Franco. “Where exactly?” asked Berlusconi.

Several Senators huddled with Franco, who gasped to his colleagues, “What?” Another Senator explained that not only does Berlusconi own the Senate property, but also the entire country.

“It happened in 98 or 99,” explained Napolitano, the President of the Senate. “We were doing poorly and it seemed a good way to raise money. Essentially the entire country was taken by eminent domain, then auctioned off. Berlusconi was the highest, and only, bidder.”

As Berlusconi continued his dance, he hit several high notes, singing, “Ciao et ci vediamo,” and the crowd dissipated. Later in the day, the attorney general started an investigation of the sale. The investigation ended as quickly as it started after Berlusconi telephoned and explained he was the landlord and didn’t want any investigations going on within his property. A helicopter dropped down to pick him up. Reporters crowded the aircraft asking where he was going.

“I’m not sure,” sang the exiled former Senator. With a wink, he added, “I have so much to choose from.”

  1. One question, is Vatican City included in the Berlusconi portfolio? Seems like his kind of place style-wise and, I’m guessing, wild beyond imagination inside.
